Being of Good Cheer (Assisted)

It snowed today. We got about 4". Unfortunately, due to the economy and budget cutbacks, snow removal and salting have been drastically reduced everywhere. Perhaps it's a pay to play situation and the crooked and shameless scoundrel governor is getting payback after noticing that I didn't make a contribution to his last campaign. I left work at 2:00 to avoid the worst of the storm and ended up getting home at 7:00. During the entire FIVE HOURS that it took me to get home in a MEASLY FOUR INCHES of snow, I saw exactly ONE SNOWPLOW. If this sort of thing continues, I have two words for every pol in the state of Illinois who is even considering re-election: Michael Bilandic.

Imperial Tidbits
L-R: Tomatillo Salsa, Apple Ginger Marmalade, Raspberry Jam. Black and Blueberry Jam

In a case of great timing, something was waiting for me when I got home- a package from Mark and Rodger. It contained a variety of imperial tidbits- jams, salsa and the like. Mark and Rodger are excellent cooks and master canners. I'm especially looiking forward to trying the apple-ginger marmelade. I felt better instantly. Thanks Mark and Rodger!

Entertaining with Insects

Underneath all the canned goodies was another surprise- a book about how to entertain with insects. In this case, 'how to entertain' means how to cook with insects and then serve them to your hapless guests. I can't wait to try the honeybee souflée.

Another surefire method of coping with an afternoon like today's: purple ice cream.

Doug, that ginger-apple marmalade sounds sooooo good! The purple ice cream looks good, but don't you dare try to serve me honey bee souffle or any other insect laden foods!

Oh, and just to pique your interest, there will be Australian butterflys showing up on my blog one day very soon! (I might even need some help ID-ing them!)

Ooooooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuu! I sure am glad that I don't live near you to become a hapless guest who is served insects!
And leave those honeybees alone, they have enough problems without you cooking them, fgs.
But you can serve me some of that blackberry ice cream, yummie!

ps I read your blog all the time, but mostly imalurker.

I think I'm going to have to send Mark and Rodger my address. Those jars of homemade goodness look delicious.

FIVE HOURS TO GET HOME!!!! I'd say it's time to impeach your governor.

I'd have some ice cream, but I'd probably pass on the insects.

Somehow I do NOT see Dr. Taron out there with a net snatching up bees to make a souffle. Hah. GO GLAD everything arrived on a day like that nasty one was. And I just wrote about how Portland cannot handle snow events. I was shocked to read about budget cuts on snow removal...in CHICAGO! Must GO....MUST GO Google Blackberry Ice Cream. YUM.

5 hours to get home? That sucks. I go into relapse anytime I get in traffic that reminds me of the hell I endured in LA for 16 years. You've also made me hungry. Time to go fix some dinner.

Kathie- The black raspberry ice cream came out very well this time. I haven't tried the apple-ginger marmalade and won't be able to until I return from New England. I'll look for the Aussie butterflies.

Pat- Greetings and welcome to the Tapestry. I've seen your blog before, I remember coveting your kitty. The honeybees are safe from me.

Robin- I've been the beneficiary of Rodger and Mark's goodness on more than one occasion. Impeaching out governor is long overdue.

pablo and Ben- The ice cream is definitely getting more votes than the insect cuisine.

Mark- Thanks again. The souflée actually uses brood rather than adult honeybees. You can get that from a beekeeper of which I know several.

cedrorum- Yesterday was compared to a snowstorm from 1990. I remember it well- I was stuck in traffic for even longer that time.

Lem- We're about to finish this batch off.

Five hours to get home- YIKES- now with this big storm coming today I am worried that you and Leon won't get into Boston tomorrow- they are saying 8-12 inches of snow- with the most snow coming to Cape Ann- David has a half day of school today-to let the kids get home before the worst of the storm hits- YIKES- safe travels-can't wait to see you guys!

They all look so yummy.. okay, I would definitely try the Black Raspberry Ice cream.. mmm!!! Will they stain my teeth? :-)

Entertaining with insects? When I was in China years ago with my mum, I went to this remote village where my she was born. Her neighbors cooked us some veggie dish with some 'worms' in them. Bleh... I ate them at the time, but now when I think about it, I don't think I can anymore.

I love insects, too, but only when they don't fly and crawl and attack me! The Natural History Museum here have an annual insect fair every year! That's where I got my first millipede!! :-)

xo, r

PS. Take care luff! I shall be back!

Bilandic's bio should be required reading for every politician north of New Orleans!

Moe- Somehow I still like the place.

CG- We are safely home- see newest post.

Robert- Thanks for stopping by. Which natural history museum did you get your millipede at.

Dave- It's a lesson to be ignored at one's peril. There was a lot more plowing going on during Friday's storm. I thinks some people got the message.

Spo- The tidbits or Mark and Rodger? I can answer in the affirmative either way.

bev- It was a character-building experience. The ice cream is now gone.
