Late Eggplant

Even though it's very late September, I'm still getting great stuff from the garden. Here's part of yesterday's haul. I'm amazed by how well the eggplant has done this year. These are the heirloom Asian variety Pingtung, which I grew from seed this spring (thanks again, Urspo). The sweet red pepper in the foreground is Nardello, and the red bell pepper in the background is Wisconsin, both also heirlooms. The Nardello did great, and both varieties taste good. I was hoping that by using a variety named Wisconsin and going the heirloom rather than hybrid route, I might avoid problems with poor yield off of otherwise healthy plants that I have typically experienced when trying to grow bell peppers. Alas, it was not to be. My 3 plants produces a season total of 3 bell peppers. Oh, well, most things have been very successful this year. This weekend, I may actually have to harvest and freeze eggplant- they're doing that well for me.

Festive picture!!

I'll have to try the Nardello next year, it looks great. Our bell peppers didn't even grow as large as your Nardello so you can see why we don't grow them here.

So, you two can share an eggplant, basil and pepper stuffed pepper for dinner tonight. A perfect vegetarian meal.

Rodger- We have found that we do much better with sweet peppers if we grow the long red Italian style ones or a beautiful tapered light green one called Gypsy.

RCW -The ones in the picture went into a casserole. But several of their compatroits have gone into pasta sauces.

Spo- For some reason Blogger has been giving lots of folks problems with the comments lately.

HEather - Glad you are back.

And to everyone- Thanks. I chose this variety of eggplant based on the picture in the catalog. I did not expect it to be nearly so vivid in real life. I was pleasantly surprised to be wrong about that.

Unbelievable! THAT's beautiful produce! And I thought Chicago would be too cold at night by now to have anything left. Luckily I finished off ours because the woodshed project was going to begin, but nature helped. RAINS began, cold nights, I took the deer fence down, and within two nights----all that was left was gone. Except: the few hot peppers left. LEAVES are gone on them, but I'm picking the pepper as I want. I'm envious of those beautiful eggplants and I don't even eat the stuff.
